Game Art Illustration - Freelance Cartoonist Portfolio

This cartoonist portfolio contains several examples of my work as a game artist for hire. It includes some samples of 2d game art that I illustrated for card games and board games. It also contains examples of game packaging that I designed and illustrated as well. And finally it contains work I did as a GUI (graphical user interface) designer redesigning the look and feel of a popular electronic paint-by-number game application. Prior employment experience (not shown) includes positions as a game artist or GUI designer of proprietary products.

As a game artist for hire, I know that game design requires many different skill sets, like designing for different target audiences, storytelling, conceptualizing, character design, prop illustration, settings and background illustration, vector and raster illustration programs, animation skills, and understanding of programming. I offer experience to varying degrees in all these areas.

For two decades, I designed and illustrated GUI (graphical user interfaces) for large computer and web-based training programs and for electronic games. Many of these products required hands-on skill with sprites and animation, as well as programming knowledge in order to create the game art per the programmer’s requirements.

As a game artist for hire, I offer career-long experience as a game designer, cartoon illustrator, art director, and more. I offer full transfer of image rights, delivery of vector or raster illustrations, expert experience and consultation, confidentiality, fast turn-around, and expert communication and collaboration skills.

2D Cartoon Illustration for Card Games and Board Games

For me, game illustration has a symbiotic relationship to cartooning as many games are illustrated for children (or for the child inside us adults!) I have had a unique opportunity to illustrate many different card games and board games for all ages.

As a game artist for hire, I am passionate about making games that are not only fun but are beautiful as well. I enjoy illustrating concepts and props, designing characters, and illustrating settings and backgrounds. And I have the unique ability to match any cartoon illustration style!

Below is a small sampling of cartoon illustrations for different card games. The portfolio also shows characters, packaging, and game boards illustrated for different board games.

Game Package Design and Illustration

Creating cartoon illustration for game packaging is something I enjoy doing. I offer freelance illustration skills from cartooning to realism. I also offer the abilities as a freelance graphic designer to layout the package according to the box manufacturer’s specifications.

Many of the principles and practices of graphic design apply to package design for games. Whether games are on crowded shelves at the stores, or on crowded web pages of an online store, the packaging of a game should be designed to stand out from all the rest. It must target a variety of audience ages, it also must look fun to play, have uniquely branded display text, and an overall appeal that makes the customers want it.

Below are a couple of samples of game packages I illustrated. You can see more examples of product packaging I designed and/or laid out on my package design page .

Mobile Game Artist

Examples of the mobile game work I have done for clients have been proprietary, or in the capacity of customizing pre-purchased stock games for clients. I will work in any capacity you need whether as a cartoon illustrator, art director, professional consultant, or any combination.

As a mobile game artist for hire, I offer career-long experience as a game designer, cartoon illustrator, art director, and more. I offer full transfer of image rights, delivery of vector or raster illustrations, expert experience and consultation, confidentiality, fast turn-around, and expert communication and collaboration skills.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) Designer

I have had extensive experience at designing large web-based training programs which use the same principles and practices of GUI design. I was hired to redesign the look and feel of a popular paint-by-number game application. The only requirement the client had was that it needed to be purple.

The work consisted of creating a beautiful and intuitive new look and feel, icon navigation buttons, variety of controls, variety of layouts for different screen types, as well as recommending control behaviors. In addition, the layouts had to be similar, yet flexible so as to change between landscape and portrait orientations depending on how the player wanted to hold their phone.

This game app is shown in the portfolio below. I think you’ll agree, the new look for the popular game app is very beautiful, easy on the eyes, easy to use and intuitive to navigate!
